The UWG Theatre Program offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree, which allows students to explore both technical and performance courses. There are classes offered in the BA that help students develop their craft in acting, design, playwriting, and directing. Students also earn credits for their roles as designers, stage managers, crew, and performers, among other positions, in UWG Theatre Company productions.
UWG Theatre also offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with concentrations in Acting and Design/Technology, for the student who wishes more focused training. All incoming freshman Theatre Majors start their careers at UWG in the BA program for their first 30 credit hours, and during that first year they learn the difference between the two degrees. During their second semester on campus, students will meet with their faculty mentors to discuss which degree best suits the student. To get into the BFA, students must earn an overall GPA of 2.5 in their first 30 credit hours, and a 3.0 GPA in their Theatre course work in those first 30 credit hours. BFA candidates must also audition or show their portfolios to a faculty committee in order to be invited into the BFA program. In order to stay in the program, BFA students must be cast in one principal role each year.
UWG also offers, in partnership with the Music Program, an Interdisciplinary Certificate in Musical Theatre. This certificate is 17 credit hours and includes courses in voice (singing), acting, dance, voice (for the stage), and movement. It is open to all majors. Students must audition to get into this certificate program.
UWG is accredited through the National Association of Schools of Theatre (BA).
